Sufiah leaves again
Even after they had seemingly reconciled, it was clear that there were still many unresolved issues between Sufiah and her father. The situation was still very fragile, but we finally had a family meeting where Iskander and I encouraged Sufiah and Farooq to communicate properly and lay all their issues on the table.
Sufiah then told us why she had run away and aired her grievances about Farooq and his past behaviour. After a long and emotional discussion, Iskander asked Sufiah what she really wanted from Farooq — and Sufiah said that she just wanted Farooq to apologise for the way he'd treated her and the rest of our family.
Farooq did apologise, and the two of them hugged and made up. I knew that we still had a long way to go before our family would be truly settled, but things appeared to be moving in the right direction.
Things go back downhill
Unfortunately, Farooq soon forgot about his apology, and just a few weeks after our discussion he launched into a lengthy verbal attack against Sufiah, Aisha, and me.
Because this was exactly what Farooq had promised not to do, Sufiah refused to give him another chance and she immediately left — even though everything had been fine just a few hours before.
Everything went downhill for Sufiah after this final incident. She informed us that she was getting a divorce from Jonathan and did not want the family to contact her. Since Sufiah was already an adult (this was in 2004), we had to respect her wishes and heard nothing from or about her until we received the news that she had become an escort.
Unfortunately, I cannot speculate as to why Sufiah did this, as people can change a great deal in four years and I don't know what kind of life she was living during this time.
